National PSHE CPD course in Wiltshire

Tuesday 26th September 2017

We are pleased to be able to offer Wiltshire teachers, and others who are involved in the delivery of PSHE, the opportunity to undertake the national qualification in PSHE during 2018.

This will help to raise the quality of PSHE in Wiltshire, as schools prepare for the introduction of statutory RSE, and potentially the whole of PSHE, during 2019.

The course is accredited through the University of Roehampton and is delivered at degree level.  Teachers and School Nurses study at Level 6 (equivalent to third year degree level).  Other PSHE professionals study at Level 4 (equivalent to first year degree level).  There are 30 credits for each level, which can be used towards a foundation degree or a degree.

The aims of the programme are:

  • to improve the competence and confidence of those delivering PSHE;
  • to raise the quality of teaching and learning in PSHE to improve the knowledge, understanding and skills of children and young people;
  • to effect positive change in PSHE curriculum planning, leadership, delivery and development within schools and other settings; and
  • to provide accredited recognition for individuals’ knowledge, experience and skills relating to teaching, learning and practice within PSHE.

The course takes one year to complete and there are gaps between the three central training days to enable participants to develop and refine policies, practice and pedagogy.

During the programme the participant will deliver a PSHE lesson, which is observed by a member of school staff.  The participant will focus on the National PSHE standards (shared during the training sessions) and will consider the implications of these in a reflective journal.

Elements that will need to be submitted for the assignment are:

  • A completed cover sheet
  • One reflective lesson plan, including a lesson critique (1,500 words)
  • An extract from a Scheme of Work, showing the context of the lesson plan
  • One completed lesson observation
  • An extended piece of writing based on extracts from a reflective journal and a bibliography (3,500 words)

Participants signing up via cpd online, will be registered with the University by 19 January 2018 and will submit assignments by 17 September 2018.

This course has been subsidised by Public Health to enable us to offer it at the significantly reduced rate of £240.  However, as the University fees are not refundable once participants are registered with the University of Roehampton, we will ask schools and organisations to pay the University fees of £400+VAT for those participants who do not attend any of the 3 central training days or complete the course.

Applications from teachers will take priority, although the course is also open to other school staff and professionals working in a school delivering PSHE including: nurses, police and fire officers, youth workers, HLTAs and Teaching Assistants.
