Oral Health Survey of Year 6 children 2022-23

Oral health is an important aspect of a child’s overall health status and school readiness. Children who have toothache or who need treatment may have pain, infections and difficulties with eating, sleeping and socialising. The most common reason for junior school children in England to have a general anaesthetic is for tooth extractions due to dental decay.
Your local community dental service has been commissioned to support the National Dental Epidemiology Programme. This involves an oral health survey of small sample of Year 6 children from primary schools which are randomly selected to take part. This survey collects information on the oral health of Year 6 children and how this affects their daily lives. This helps inform planning to improve oral health, reduce health inequalities and shape the provision of treatment services.
If your school is randomly selected to participate, we would be grateful if you could support the survey and encourage parents to give permission for their children to take part. The survey will take place between November 2022 and March 2023. Selected schools will be contacted by the providers who will share all paperwork about the survey, including information and permission forms for parents and guardians.
The welfare of every school’s children and staff is the highest priority. All survey team members have DBS checks and will be following national and local infection & prevention protocols.
