The Wrap - new online platform for young people aged 11 to 18
Wednesday 5th May 2021
The Wrap is a new online platform, launched in April 2021, for young people aged 11 to 18, by South West based charity - Developing Health Independence (DHI).
The site brings together up-to-date information, self-help tools and access to professional support, with a focus on education over intervention. The project has been part-funded by Wilshire Council.
The aim of The Wrap is to ensure young people are better informed on issues around risk taking behaviours such as sex or drug and alcohol use, to put them in control of their decisions and help minimise risk.
The team behind the project believe that making accessible, straight-talking information and support easily available will reduce the need for more serious interventions later in life.
Rosie Phillips, CEO, DHI, said: “When it comes to issues such as sex and drug use, the ‘just say no’ approach is unrealistic. This approach can cause more harm than good and ignores the fact that risk taking and experimentation are a natural part of growing up.
“From our work with young people we know the best way to support them is by giving them access to the information they need. Then when they take decisions, they can keep themselves as safe as possible."
The Wrap also provides information for parents and carers, teachers and other professionals working with young people. Resources will be added in the coming months designed specifically for adults, to equip them with the tools and information they need to promote open and honest conversations around difficult issues.
The platform is designed to be as accessible as possible and all information and tools can be accessed anonymously, online, for free. The platform has an online self-assessment tool which allows young people, professionals, parents and carers to identify the help they need and direct them to the right support where necessary.
